How To Make A Camera Lens In Illustrator

Read Time: 8 mins Languages:

In this tutorial, we'll create a detailed camera lens similar to the one used as the logo for Apple'south Aperture photo-editing software. A camera lens is good for a software icon, logo, or just as a graphic for use in whatever design. Although, the image appears detailed, the process of creating it involves lilliputian more than than simply layering objects with dissimilar fills and gradients to give a three-dimensional illusion.

Every few weeks, we revisit some of our reader'southward favorite posts from throughout the history of the site. This tutorial was outset published in Baronial of 2008.

Step one

Create a new document of whatever size and attribute ratio you'd similar. Unlike Photoshop, in Illustrator it's quite piece of cake to change the document size anytime during our piece of work. We can merely resize the vector graphics to fit the new dimensions. I initially chose a foursquare certificate at 550 pixels by 550 pixels.

Since the process of creating our image is primarily simply layering shapes with unlike gradients and fills over each other, most of the post-obit steps will merely say what the size of the circumvolve should be, what the gradient type is, the gradients direction, the colors used in the slope, their color finish locations in the gradient, and the location of the center slider(s) in the gradient.

Make the kickoff circle is 429px wide, with a -45 degree linear gradient, which has a 100% gray (at 100% cease) to twoscore% Gray (at 0% terminate), and the center slider set at 50%.

Stride 2

Brand the second circle is 423px wide with a -45 degree linear slope, which has a 100% grey (at 100% stop) to 60% gray (at 0% stop), and the middle slider at 50%.

Footstep 3

Make the third circle is 368px broad, with a 135 caste linear slope, which has a 100% gray (at 100% stop) to 50% gray (at 0% stop), and the middle slider at 33%.

Step iv

Make the fourth circle is 364px wide, with a solid black fill up. Additionally, we're going to give this circumvolve a feather of 3px past going to Effect > Stylize > Feather.

Step 5

Make the fifth circle is 359px wide with a solid seventy% gray fill.

Step 6

Make the sixth circle 339px wide with a 90 degree linear gradient, which has a 100% gray (at 100% stop) to 60% gray (at 0% stop), and the eye slider at 50%.

Step 7

Make the 7th circumvolve 335px wide with a solid 70% greyness fill up.

Step 8

Make the 8th circumvolve 329px broad with a xc degree linear gradient, which has a 100% gray (at 100% finish) to 60% greyness (at 0% end), and the center slider at 50%.

Step 9

Make the 9th circle 325px wide with a solid 70% greyness make full.

Step 10

Brand the tenth circle 319px broad with a 90 degree linear slope, which has a 100% grey (at 100% stop) to threescore% grayness (at 0% stop), and the center slider at 50%

Step 11

Make the eleventh circumvolve 315px wide with a 130 degree linear gradient, a 100% gray (at 100% stop) to ninety% grey (at 0% stop), and the centre slider at 50%.

Footstep 12

Make the twelfth circle 277px wide with a radial gradient, which has a 100% grey (at 100% finish) to 80% gray (at 0% stop), and the middle slider at 50%. The radial gradient should originate from the center and go darker toward the edge.

To change the bespeak from where it originates, select the Slope tool, and click and drag from the tiptop left-most corner of the circle to the lesser correct-most corner. Hint: if the gradient isn't changing when yous elevate across, make sure the circle is selected.

Footstep 13

For the side by side circle nosotros need a slightly more complex slope, and for that we'll use a gradient mesh. Slope meshes are extremely powerful and can exist used to create incredibly circuitous and photo realistic illustrations by blending colors in an virtually infinite number of ways. Nonetheless, we only demand a simple mesh here, so create a 268px wide circle and fill up it with solid blackness.

Gradient meshes tin can be created manually by adding mesh points using none other than the Gradient Mesh tool, only since nosotros simply demand a elementary one, we'll accept Illustrator create it for us. Select the circle, and go to Object > Create Slope Mesh. Leave all of the default values set, merely change the rows and columns to 3 each. When you click OK, Illustrator volition create the mesh.

With the circle selected, switch to the Directly Selection tool, and click on a bespeak (intersection) on the mesh to select information technology. And then, click in the top left-most area of the mesh and change its color to 80% gray. Side by side, click in the bottom right-most expanse and change its color to 70% greyness.

Step xiv

Make the fourteenth circumvolve 225px wide with a solid white fill. Additionally, give this circle a Feather of 6px by going to Effect > Stylize > Plume..

Stride 15

Make the fifteenth circumvolve 220px wide with a solid black make full. And so add a 3px Plume to this circumvolve.

Nosotros're too going to start this circle. First, align it center with all of the other circles. Then, using the Pointer keys, nudge it up twice and to the left twice.

Step 16

Make the sixteenth circle 216px broad with a solid black fill up.

Tip: you may want to lock down the offset black circle created in Step fifteen. So you lot tin can still select all of the shapes and eye them relative to the art lath without disrupting the outset one.

Step 17

Brand the seventeenth circle 208px wide with a radial slope, which has a 100% Grey (at 100% stop) to xc% Greyness (at 0% stop), and the center slider at 50%.

Step 18

Make the eighteenth circle 208px wide with no make full and a 7pt white stroke. So apply a 4px Plumage to this circle.

Step 19

At present nosotros'll add some glare and reflections to our inner lens to give it a glass appearance. Draw a sort of half-moon shape with the Pen tool, make full it with white, and give it an 8px Feather. Likewise, lower its Opacity to 75%.

Step 20

To add a bit of a glare to the bottom corner of the lens, draw an oval shape with the Pen tool. It'southward okay if it's not perfect, as some imperfection will add to the upshot. Again, fill the shape with white, give it a 3px feather, and lower its opacity to 50%.

Step 21

Next nosotros'll add a few more reflections to the lens. Depict two more than shapes, as shown beneath. And then fill up them with white, give them a 3px Feather, and lower their Opacity to twenty%.

Stride 22

Depict a few ovals with the Ellipse tool, making them larger equally they go. Rotate them to nigh a 45 degree angle, and place them in a diagonal line with the smallest oval towards the center. Once you take three done in a row, select them all, copy them, and so rotate them and identify them in line with the first 3, once more with the smallest oval toward the center.

Pace 23

All that'southward left to do is add together the outer lens. To practice that, draw a white circle that covers all of the camera lens except for the outer frame. Then, using the Scissors tool, click on the top right-most corner and slightly below the left-almost side of the circumvolve path to cut the path at those points.

Delete the bottom one-half of the circle, then, with the Pen tool, click on one end of the path to continue it. Then click on the other stop and drag to create a curved line joining the ends of the half-circle. Once yous've drawn the half-circumvolve, lower its Opacity to 50%.

Step 24

We're now going to create a transparency mask to add a slight affect of glare to the lens reflection. A transparency mask is composed of a shape on top of another shape. The summit shape used as the mask can be black, white, or any shade of gray, or a grayscale gradient.

When the mask is created, the areas of the shapes underneath are made transparent based on the shade of gray that is laid over them. So, the darker the area of the top shape, the lower the transparency volition exist of the bottom shape under that area. The lighter the shade of greyness, the more opaque that surface area will exist.

To create our mask, re-create the half-circle we created in the last step and paste it directly on top of the original (Command + F for Paste In Front). Bring the opacity of the re-create back up to 100%, and fill it with a white to black gradient originating in the top left-most corner. To alter the origination point, over again use the Gradient tool equally we did before.

Step 25

The last step is to create the transparency mask. To exercise then, right-click on the top half-circle and become to Select > Next Object Below. This will select the bottom shape. To select the meridian one as well, agree Shift and click on it. In the Transparency palette, click on the popup menu push in the top-right corner and select Brand Opacity Mask.

Conclusion

The text effectually the frame is accomplished using the Type On a Path Tool, located under the Type tool. Simply, draw a circle whose edge runs along the heart of the frame, select the Blazon tool, and click on the circle to begin typing along the path.

That's information technology! We've finished our camera lens. Information technology's fix to be used as an icon, logo, or any other type of graphic for wherever information technology's needed. And the best part - information technology's fully scalable! Retrieve that complex graphics can be created only past combining simple shapes and colors, and that 3D furnishings can be imitation with simple 2D shapes as well.
